As a nation, we are defined by our love for water as we are surrounded by several bodies of water. From our beautiful beaches, to our backyard and public swimming pools, even our own bathrooms. As the hotter seasons approach us, the need to prepare our children around water is essential. Although water is enjoyable, it is also very dangerous and children are especially susceptible.

A recent report from the 2018 National Drowning Report has seen an unprecedented number of drowning in children. A shocking spike in drowning deaths are reported between October - March, with weekends having the highest representation of drowning deaths.

Tragically, there have been a reported number of 18 drowning deaths by those 0-4 years of age and 12 drowning deaths by those 5-17 years old. A shocking statistic to digest as it reminds parents of the importance to teach children water safety.

A child who learns how to swim when young develops a vital life long skill of water safety and confidence in their swimming ability. Swimming is also a great way to have fun and beat the heat!

We know that 0-4 year olds contributed to 45% of non-fatal drowning deaths in public pools. Therefore, we’re very fortunate that the City of Canada Bay is supporting our swim program by offering 50% off swimming lessons for residents of Canada Bay aged pre-school to year one at Drummoyne & Cabarita Swimming Centres. Places are limited to 129 students, so be sure to register by 7 Janury 2019. Call us on 8757 3059 to find out more!
